25 Area CHARACTERplus Schools to Receive Promising Practices Award

CHARACTERplus, an initiative of Cooperating School Districts, along with the Character Education Partnership (CEP), honor 25 St. Louis-area schools for earning the annual Promising Practices Award.

The CEP Promising Practices Award recognizes unique and specific exemplary practices that encourage the ethical, social, and academic growth of K-12 students through character education. A Promising Practice is a unique and specific character education strategy or program that addresses one or more of CEP’s Eleven Principals of Effective Character Education. Winning practices included creative ways to encourage positive relationships, recognize students for good behavior, and offer students opportunities to give back to their school and community.

Over 100 schools and districts from around the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Singapore will receive 130 awards with 25 of those coming from St. Louis metropolitan-area CHARACTERplus schools. “When you realize that 20% of the schools to receive Promising Practices nationwide come from the St. Louis area, it confirms that our schools and districts are leading the country in character education,” says Liz Gibbons, director of CHARACTERplus.

CHARACTERplus is a project of Cooperating School Districts that works to advance the cause of character education and sustain its impact on educators and students. The CEP received 206 applications overall. The theme for the event is “Investing in America’s Future.” The 25 area schools will receive their awards at CEP’s 14th National Forum on Character Education, to be held November 1-3, 2007 in Arlington, Virginia.
